PAWTUCKET CITY HALL
137 Roosevelt Avenue, Pawtucket, RI / website
Originally built in 1935, the Pawtucket City Hall is a landmark, symbolizing democracy and strength. Besides its importance as a functional building, it also remains a significant architectural example of the Art Deco style in Rhode Island.
This task was not a simple one, as original documentation of the building's construction was lost several years ago. Walsh Architect took on the challenge of matching, trying to recreate the original brickwork and tower. Repairs were made to the detailing on the exterior of all facades, including replaced masonry, brickwork, and new carvings. Material choices were dictated by the existing structure; those materials that would age to match were also considered. One of the most interesting parts of the repairs was the construction of four 12 foot 9 inch eagle that top the tower on all faces. Walsh Architect drew detailed and accurate plans for these birds, then commissioned a sculptor to make casts which were then affixed to the tower.
