PAWTUCKET CITY HALL
137 Roosevelt Avenue, Pawtucket, RI / website

Originally built in 1935, the Pawtucket City Hall is a landmark, symbolizing democracy and strength. Besides its importance as a functional building, it also remains a significant architectural example of the Art Deco style in Rhode Island.

This task was not a simple one, as original documentation of the building's construction was lost several years ago. Walsh Architect took on the challenge of matching, trying to recreate the original brickwork and tower. Repairs were made to the detailing on the exterior of all facades, including replaced masonry, brickwork, and new carvings. Material choices were dictated by the existing structure; those materials that would age to match were also considered. One of the most interesting parts of the repairs was the construction of four 12 foot 9 inch eagle that top the tower on all faces. Walsh Architect drew detailed and accurate plans for these birds, then commissioned a sculptor to make casts which were then affixed to the tower.

Other alterations include replaced windows and lattice work on the tower base, two additional stone eagles flanking the entryway, and a dozen base reliefs on the ground floor facing Roosevelt Avenue. The tower itself was also a significant undertaking, a required working closely with engineers to perfect its renovation. The tower is hollow on the inside, containing only structural support, and is meant for exterior viewing only. The tower itself, visible throughout most of Pawtucket and highway I-95, is representative of the rebirth of Pawtucket. Residents have a heightened sense of pride in their city, which Walsh Architect desired to evidence on the new face of the City Hall.

Historic restoration. Completed in 2007.
